Analog Systems

An analog typesetting stencil that draws from the logic of punch cards, where a system of holes encodes information, and from 8-bit pixel fonts, in which simple grids generate letterforms. I was interested in how minimal units can produce both function and beauty through repetition.

Combining these influences, I designed a circle-based type system that serves as the template for a hole-punched stencil. Using pencil and paper, I manually typeset a poster of lyrics from Ella Fitzgerald’s “Blue Skies.” The final composition contains 29 words and 124 letters and took five hours to complete. The time-intensive process foregrounds labor and patience, transforming digital logic into a slow, physical experience of making.
